JF, > Still a private citizen. Would you limit his freedom?

Is this another instance of you getting defensive when a fellow liberal is criticized?

Carter can do whatever he wants, but he's acting as a self-appointed proxy for the State Department. At the very least, that's disrespectful of everything that is going on in Washington.

Worse, foreign parties get the impression that they don't have to deal directly with the State Department. "Just call that guy Carter. He's a nice guy. He'll give us what we want."
