Why is the discussion only about either doing what the most extreme proponents of action are calling for or doing nothing? Because that's how the discussion developed. Remember, it started with "loony" and "hysterical." And everyone got exercised and started talking about "the most extreme proponents." There are other choices. A sensible middle course seems prudent. Of course there are, although I don't know that "choices" is the right word. That's a whole 'nother subject. Your path is set by the voices that dominate the discussion. You have to put them in their place before other voices can be heard. John and I had a long discussion about this maybe a year ago. I argued that the extreme proponents were fear mongering and hurting the cause. I still believe that. He argued that you have to get people really scared or they won't do anything. He has a point. Whether those extreme voices are an net asset or the main obstacle, they are there and they are setting the agenda. And you don't find a gathering around a sensible middle course.
