New Delhi, May 5 After the Tatas and the Ambanis, it is now the B C Jindal Group, which has informed the government of its plans to set up a multi-billion dollar project to manufacture coal-based fuels like crude oil and dimethyl ether (DME) through coal liquefaction and surface gasification technologies.

Seeking allocation of six blocks with massive coal reserves of over 15,000 million tonne, the Jindals have informed the government (in its April 29 letter) that it is in the process of short listing competent Companies having latest technologies for production of DME and syn-oil (oil from coal). A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will then be entered into by the Jindals with the appropriate technology partner.

"We now wish to diversify into the field of manufacturer of DME through surface gasification route. The DME would be used as a transport fuel (by blending it with diesel) and domestic cooking fuel (blended with LPG). The group also wants to diversify into the manufacture of syn-oil by coal liquefaction." the Jindal group wrote to the ministry of coal.

Facing oil shortages, both India and China are speeding up efforts to develop an oil substitution programme to reduce its reliance on oil imports and offset the effects of rising oil prices. China is learnt to have already planned investments close to $3 trillion in setting up of such cleaner fuel projects.

Coal-based DME is a clean-burning alternative to liquefied petroleum gas, liquid natural gas, diesel and gasoline.

The coal blocks identified by the Jindal's for allocation and suitable production of DME and syn-oil includes the 500 million tonne each Alaknanda and Bankhui block, the 600 million tonne Sakhigopal B and the 3000 mt Srirampur block, the 4000 mw West of Radhikapur and the Ramchand block which is under exploration.
