You know what is really scary? When this low interest rate cycle is over the amount going to fund interest on our debt will explode. The fed has been very kind to Bush but it won't last forever. If I recall most Fed debt has relatively short maturities. Well at least social security may get healthier as the trust fund yields will go up also. I would like to see an honest debate on how this massive debt will get paid off.

"It includes defense related costs that aren't part of the defense budget"

Yes, I noticed that. I found that a useful way to look at it. A truer cost.

Overall it might be more useful. OTOH, the cost for the care of Veterans of past wars, doesn't reflect the costs of today's actions and activities. Its a cost that in a real sense was incurred in the past, even though it is being paid now.

A better figure would be the future cost of taking care of today's wounded veterans, but than your estimating rather than giving actual figures.
