Now that Hillary and Obama's debating relationship "turned 21", I think it's time to say sayonara to the whole exercise until October. Unless it's something like Hundt suggests and we get a real issues-oriented debate for a change.

Call it the "New Politics Forum" and put the whole thing on YouTube, where we know voters are really interested in watching.

M. J. Rosenberg posts regularly to Josh Marshall's blog empire. He's typically an over-the-top kind of poster. But this morning I find his over-the-topness reflects some of my over-the-topness. FWIW.

Obama is a Weatherman!!!! His Mommy Was a Commie!! And McCain Could Be HRC's Next Target!!!

By M.J. Rosenberg - April 17, 2008, 7:07AM

This campaign has become a joke. Did Hillary really say last night that New Yorkers were "deeply hurt" by something some guy named Bill Ayers said about the World Trade Center attack in 2001? But who's Bill Ayers? I never heard of him. What was the Weather Underground? And what in God's name does Barack Obama who missed the whole 1960's because he was in elementary school have to do with any of it?

Nothing. Not a thing. It's all part of the new McCarthy (not Gene) campaign being run by a Democrat against another Democrat. Bottom line: Obama is a Commie.

John McCain better watch out if Hillary is our nominee because she knows no limits.

And McCain notoriously befriended the late David Ifshin who, during the Vietnam war, went to Hanoi to broadcast anti-American messages on their radio. Later he straightened out and became an aide to Mondale and Dukakis. When the Republicans found out about Ifshin's record, they tried to use him to destroy our candidates.

Not John McCain. Ifshin went to see McCain, the old POW, the guy who was rotting in a Hanoi prison while Ifshin was broadcasting solidarity with the Viet Cong, and apologized. Mc Cain saw that Ifshin in the 1980's was not the Ifshin of the 1960's. They became close friends and, thanks to Mccain, the Ifshin issue disappeared without a trace.

When Ifshin tragically died at 47, McCain spoke at his funeral. He has been a constant source of support to Ifshin's family. Apparently, like Mike Huckabee, McCain seems not to do McCarthyism. These guys seem to see forgiveness as a Christian thing.

McCain better watch out. If Hillary is our nominee, his act of friendship against David Ifshin will be used against him. So what if McCain was a war hero. The people of New York would have found his (literal) embrace of a former radical lefty "deeply hurtful." The Red Scare is back. There are no limits.

With the last name of Rosenberg, I really have to worry if Hillary goes all the way. (And I confess it now. My dad was named Julius Rosenberg. Just a coincidence but if Bill Ayers or whoever he is can be dredged up against Obama, I should start worrying about my dad's name. Besides my dad voted for FDR four times. I confess.

Which way to Salem?
