It is very interesting to contrast Southern Africa of today with the situation in the late 1970's. Then, communication was relatively poor. You could feel very isolated. Now, cell phone coverage is extensive. However, power was relatively reliable then, and is much more problematical now.

I did note that the cell phone towers sprinkled all over rural Botswana and Zimbabwe were usually solar powered. I don't actually know if the system stays largely functional in power outages or not.
