Demagogy (also demagoguery) (Ancient Greek d?µa????a, from d?µ?? demos "people" and ??e?? agein "to lead") refers to a political strategy for obtaining and gaining political power by appealing to the popular prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public — typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist or populist themes.

This term refers not to one's possible motivation for desiring power (which may be subjectively "pure"), but rather to means of obtaining such power. The underlying motivation can be quite high minded, but if one believes that (lofty) ends justify (almost any) means, then engaging in demagogy seems like a natural way to go. Historically, leftist True Believers have not been shy to use any means needed to accomplish their visions.
