The principles they embodied have been abandoned by the Republican party in the last 6 years or so.

I've heard this argument but I tend to see the entire 25 year period as a logical progression that began when Reagan ramped up military spending while at the same time cutting taxes. That set the stage for the subsequent trend of deficit spending under each Republican administration.

Reagan began the degradation of union power.

Reagan tried to pay for his tax cuts by coming back with the 1986 Omnibus Tax Bill that stripped away important middle class tax deductions such as the deduction of sales tax and IRA contributions. That began the disregard for the middle class that continues today.

Iran-Contra represented a desire to meddle with foreign governments. Invading Iraq reflects the same attitude just on a bigger scale.

Everything has been a natural and predictable flow, IMO, as far as the big, important issues go.
