Twenty-five years is long enough and the trends are clear...at least to me.

Which trends? Just what did they accomplish? Welfare reform comes to mind. Tax cuts for families and on capital gains. What else? Lots of sturm und drang from the social conservatives but what else? Mostly they've just slowed the liberal agenda. Please tell me what part of their agenda they've accomplished, which trends they've established.

And how will McCain do anything but take us further down this path?

How will McCain do anything at all? With a Democratic congress, it's hard to imagine. Particularly since the GOP seems to have lost sight of the path.

Methinks you give the ogre too much credit.
