U.S. Public's View of Economy Deteriorates, Post/ABC Poll Shows

By James Kraus

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. public's view of the economy deteriorated at the fastest rate recorded by a Washington Post-ABC News survey.

A majority of those polled also turned negative on Iraq, with six out of ten saying the U.S. doesn't need to win the war there to combat terrorism.

The economic situation and Iraq are the two top concerns among U.S. voters and may weaken Republican chances of winning the November elections, the poll showed.

Almost nine out 10 people questioned said the economy had turned negative and a majority said it was in ``poor shape,'' the greatest number in more than 15 years.

The percentage of those who held a negative view of the economic situation rose 33 points in the past year, while the number of those who rated the economy negatively rose 13 points in the last two months, the fastest 60-day drop since 1985.

The poll was carried out according to a random sampling of 1,197 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
