the fall of communism was a beautiful thing to behold. Reagan and Gorby did the dance beautifully. I dont know if you remember but folks were writing about gorby before he took over and that was back in the carter admin. The right men at the right time and it wouldnt have happened peacefully without those two at the helm. And bush 41.

Pretty easy to claim now that the wall was coming apart from within way back in the early 80's.

There were lots of people talking about it back then. By the early 1980s. By that time, the standard of living in some of the Eastern Bloc was higher than in Moscow. Now, granted, no one was expected total collapse in less than a decade. But it was pretty obvious the wheels were coming off and that major changes would have to be made.

I was expecting them to move towards a trade-driven model and more engagement with the West. Resulting in a decrease in the threat they offered. But, instead, they sat there with a deer in the headlights look on their face and...
