Forget the escalade, how about joe sixpack pickup truck. Consumer no way in hell can afford draconian solution you propose. I think a summer respite is a good thing to spur the economy. Now if you told me you were going to set auto standards for 10 years out and gave folks advanced warning then i might be interested. But to blindside folks who own a car for lets 10 years or plan on selling it and buying new thats just not fair.

By the way i listen to all the energy and global warming stuff and just have not seen a good way to transfer into public policy by either govt or private sector. Right now price of gas is $3,50. A few years ago if we allowed drilling in anwar or offshore, built a couple of domestic refineres, started the switch to more econmic vehicles and renewable energy or just other type of energy we would not be suffering in this manner today.

Long dollar, short oil...US rates stop going down while euro slows and their rates fall. US problems transparent to all. What about EU?
