If Obama survives this gauntlet and emerges from Denver as the nominee, he will have a powerful perch to say bring it on, then trash the whole thing as old school politics from Washington insiders and more of the same Bush-Rove campaign tactics.

Succeeding at that could bring a whole sea change in how this generation of journalists covers campaigns after that.

That said, we would have all been better off if the game had never descended to this level.
