Yes, coming off a recession--with two years of growth already under its belt.

His critics clamored hysterically that the tax increase would thwart the recovery.

That they did.

As I recall, that tax increase was billed as reform. Its primary effect was to make income taxes more progressive. Remember the coup de gras--the tax surcharge on fat cat salaries?
