After reading this, I'm comfortable calling anyone who was in the Hitler Youth a Nazi (at THAT time)- maybe they didn't want to be one; maybe they secretly didn't like the Nazis- but of this I am certain- if you were in the Hitler Youth you were a Nazi- whether you got the balloons and noise makers at "The Pary", or no. Your definition would suggest all those little goose stepping Hitler Youth weren't Nazis, just because they weren't party members- and I do not accept that.

I didn't hear what Maher said- but many people retract to save their asses, rather than because they believe the substance of the retraction. And I'm not criticizing ass saving- I think it's perfectly legitimate. Nor am I personally calling the Pope a Nazi- I really don't care about the Pope or what people call him. But someone who was in the Hitler Youth WAS a Nazi- regardless of what Maher may say. I have no idea what the Pope is now, nor do I care.

And I doubt if Maher would have explicitly retracted the Nazi comment had it not been inaccurate.

Maher (I've been misspelling it) was back on his game last night and explained clearly what he meant last week.

While I didn't hear him explicitly take back the Nazi remark, he did downplay it as the throwaway line that it was, and reiterated the CIO/Pope comparison, which was the main thrust of the rant anyway.

I personally think it is a dead-on observation, although I can see how it would upset the devout and especially the Catholic folk.

Tasteless though it may have been, that doesn't lessen the point or make it any less astute of an observation.
