We agree Chavez is doing a great job, although oil production is down from when he was first elected, the friends he's put in to run the national oil ministry have been able to increase the selling price on those greedy american oil hogs so overall revenues have increased.

Nobody said LA people are lazy. In fact their Quechua and Hispanic heritage tends to militate against that. Lazy people were executed under the Inca. You would think they would have bred that out. Spanish worked hard to keep their empire going and worked their slaves even harder. What LA suffers from and has suffered from for centuries is bad government which inherited a colonialist noble-peasant polarization and a fear of democracy. We are seeing today a swing of the pendulum a tad too far in the opposite direction. The neo imperialism of the Americans in the 19th century did little to mitigate this. It was just more of the same under the United Fruit Company.

Chile with all its birthing pains and its centralization of the copper industry is a model for moderate attitude towards foreign investment and entrepreneurial spirit without sacrificing social improvements. If you visit the modern Chilean towns you will see burgeoning enterprise, good social development a healthy middle class and a hopeful feeling amongst the people towards the future. Peru has with a few setbacks and widespread corruption and extreme social unrest also trod a somewhat middle road, giving widespread encouragement to the mining entrepreneur.
