Indeed. Which is why measuring deficits is a somewhat more useful indicator. You have to achieve a current surplus before you can have any impact on the debt. In my lifetime we've had only a few surplus years. All the rest have had deficits of varying sizes. So looking at debt reduction is so far down the road as to be off the planet. Not being in deficit is so rare that we don't even have enough data points there to draw any useful conclusions. Trying to draw conclusions from the debt is, er, lame.
