Here's another thought. If Ecuador can change the rules so massively and arbitrarily and get away with it, wouldn't other countries, S. American and otherwise consider doing likewise?

On the other hand, foreign investment in these areas just might severely dry up due to Ecuador's action. And those countries could put pressure on Ecuador to come back in line.

Whichever way it goes, they opened up a can of maggots, and it won't soon be resolved. I can imagine the fireworks will soon start.
