They live in the fools paradise of power and greed. Once you have the power you can spin any tale at all about what it's based on. But it is no different than a Monarchy of the middle ages. They needed an economic system and people's co-operation too. They could go around dictating and grabbing sheaves of wheat, but eventually it impinged on the nobles and their could be a rebellion. That is how the peasant farmer in captivity of a seigneur developed. Excessive government taxation in Rome. The subsistence farmer could no longer take the State confiscation at source and sought the protection of living on a noble's estate. Instant feudalism. In Ecuador we see the peasant prefers the companies to the government or King. You can see why.

The government knows not what it does. They may know but they care not.
