There have been 20 years of relentless and consistent increases of debt as a percent of GDP under Republican Presidents in the last 28 years. The only 8 years where the cycle has been broken were under Clinton.

Yes. As Cheney might say, "so?"

If Reagan or Bush wanted to, they could have reduced the debt/GDP ratio just as Clinton did.

Yes, so?

you can hide behind the billion variables the economy depends on and argue about each ad nauseam

I'm not hiding. And I definitely don't want any nausea, mine or anyone else's. I'm trying to illuminate through analysis.

Since thread comparisons are in play, I'm reminded of another one. LB would use different terminology. No forest and trees for him. He would call me a nitpicker when I was trying to bust up some overgeneralization or overstatement or misdirection. Plus ca change. <g>

As Dale has said, some of us actually know something about some things. One of the things I know something about is performance management so I'll make an analogy out of that. I've personally designed two entirely different systems for two different agencies. I can tell you that if the president were a union member and you tried to give him performances standards based on the debt level during his watch, particularly as relates to GDP, you would be presented with and lose and unfair labor practice case Guarantee it. Performance standards need to be germane and reasonably under the party's control.
