But it has been interesting to see where all the different threads of our ideas lead

This has been a good discussion issue because it causes you to examine your basic beliefs. I went ape on it because I knew it would stir things up. People on both the "right" and the "left" find they move from their normal POV.

I agree with you about the overkill.

on the surface it would seem so....

but you have a polygamous cult with scads of children living in a 'compound'

so let's equate compound with 'home'

if you get a plausible call about sexual child abuse in a home, can you make a decision as to which children stay with the mom and which ones may or may not have been abused? are you going to take susie and sarah but leave johnny with the parents who are under investigation?

until the 'home' (compound) is thoroughly investigated to its conclusion, i don't see how you can leave children under the care of the very people who may have been either perpetuating the abuse or turning a blind eye...

i think if you choose to structure your family around a 'spiritual husband' with many wives and multitudes of children and conduct yourself in such a way that brings forth an accusation of abuse, you need to be prepared for the fact that your 'family' will undergo the same type of scrutiny and consequences of any other typical 'nuclear' family with a mom/dad/girlfriend/boyfriend with 2.5 kids

the sheer numbers of children (and women) involved doesn't negate the fact there could be potential systematic abuse within the structure of these 'families' and until it can be shown that there is and was no abuse

btw, do we know yet how many of the mothers involved are taking welfare checks yet? (committing fraud)...i don't know i f in this particular case, welfare fraud is being committed, but from what i have seen here in utah, prosecutions of polygamists have uncovered broadscale tax fraud
