Is it a state recognized marriage if there is no civil marriage involved? I don't think so.

Would you call 3 people living together and having sex a marriage? Should the cops break it up? Never happen today. We are heading into chaos.

State laws recognize common law marriage, no marriage license or ceremony required.

I wonder if common law statutes could be applied here in proving polygamy?

-------------------------------------------------------

I've read there was a similar case in 1953 in Colorado City, Utah involving hundreds of children, but the state case collapsed for lack of evidence. I've also read the children and wives are not cooperating with authorities, telling them they don't know their birthdays, names, who is who's parents.

That probably had a lot to do with the collapse of the states case in '53. One difference today is we have DNA testing. Paternity relationships will be able to established and child support orders will follow automatically to the biological fathers given that this is TX. This may end up coercing the cult to leave TX (moving to TX was probably an attempt to try out a new venue anyway). Only hitch could be is if the fathers are able to avoid testing.

Although their property will be secure - its all owned by the church, none of the individuals in the church own their own property. Gives the prophet a lot of power.
