...Hamas stating to him that they are willing to recognize the existence of Israel.

Fingers crossed that this turns out to be true.

Chinu,

<<And it is about Carter having met with the Hamas leadership the second time and Hamas stating to him that they are willing to recognize the existence of Israel.>>

I will believe it when I see it. I believe there are different parts of Hamas. I believe there is a political wing(which I believe is broken down into moderates as well as extremists) and a military wing. What one part agrees to the other doesn't always follow. Also, much of the funding for Hamas comes from elements of the Arab world that are hostile to Israel. Unless they have lined up a different source of funding, I doubt they will give up their philosophy looking for the destruction of Israel. In that part of the world, actions speak louder than words. If Hamas' words were backed up by their actions, then there is some hope.

<<But most importantly, it would pull the rug from under Israel's feet.>>

Not sure what you mean by this. If you look at the governments that Israel has elected, there have been many times that there were people in power that wanted to make peace. Once, the Israeli right had the leader assassinated. The other times, there was no willing partner for a real peace on the palestinian end. There were some governments that were not willing to look for peace and those were under Netanyahu as well as the first incarnation of Sharon. The present government I think is looking for peace but doesn't have a partner to bargain with that has the power to bring that about.
