'In American politics, the big lie is that we don't need to face up to the rot and decay of our national finances. Some politicians will say we need to face up to the rot and decay of our most valuable infrastructure -- our educational system.'

All is fine..half of our total budget goes towards defense/war, welfare and entitlements and interest on the debt..Scary all three are going to get much larger in coming years plus we have all the pressing needs you mentioned that insures 7-10%+ annual growth in total expenditures the rest of our lives.. Yeah I can now see that deflation from the $1 Trillion cost of this housing/credit fiasco coming our way for sure now<g>..

Telling the truth is fatal for a politician. Obama strikes me as both intelligent and honest, but if he speaks his mind he loses support. Clinton, who isn't handicapped by scruples, is poised to exploit this "weakness". As a related example, most of Pastor Wright's reported comments seemed reasonable to me, but they caused a media firestorm against Obama - even though he wasn't the speaker. If he had been he'd be out of the race.
