Before you do that, try this. So far it has worked for me, unlike everything else we tried. The jury is still out because we have had weather (snow and cold) that might be a factor.

I got a small radio at a junk store for $2. I stuck it between the screen and window in the corner of our bedroom closest to the woodpecker's excavation (which is about six or seven feet away). The sound quality is terrible, but it seems to keep the woodpecker away. So far, at least.
