Older docs will retire in droves. That doesnt augur well for the future. We see this in many industries. Many financial advisors will be doing the same thing because of regulation and technology. Thats the field i am in and we see it every day as luddites who are often good at what they do, leave the buz.

"but older docs just prefer their tried-and-true methods;"

I can believe that. I saw something similar when I worked at UTMB. And the docs don't have to be all that old.

"At this point, the cost of a good EMR system is still $25,000, which the typical small practice isn't going to buy."

It doesn't have to be that much. VistA is an excellent software package that can scale up and out. And it is free.

However, a system still runs $10k or so, depending on how big the practice is.
