"The Bush administration said on Sunday that it would strenuously oppose one of the Democrats' top priorities for the new Congress: legislation authorizing the government to negotiate with drug companies to secure lower drug prices for Medicare beneficiaries....

Even if that was an accurate description (and it isn't) it wouldn't amount to an attempt to destroy Medicare, only an attempt to impose a particular vision on Medicare.

In any case "negotiate with drug companies" is disingenuous. The government wouldn't be a normal buyer competing in a market. It would be a monopsony buyer forcing the price down.

When the government really negotiates in an open market, it often does a lousy job. Witness all those stories of $500 toilet seats etc. (Although that is largely do to the unusually high, and normally unnecessary requirements for the items, and for the paperwork dealing with the items)
