The Germans, as I'm sure you know, were desperate for a sense of national identity and for economic recovery, after the humiliating Versailles treaty and the horrible depression- and when Hitler promised to cure these things, even though he was obviously dictatorial, people were, in general, thrilled:

I have known Germans who lived in WWII Germany as young people. It was a truly euphoric time for most people, as Germany came out of its depression, and the Germans were promised a new glorious future courtesy of Hitler. Imagine an American patriot- imagine that depth of feeling, that belief in the supremacy of the USA, the belief that everything noble and pure comes from America, and that Americans are the best breed there is, the belief that Others, nasty unAmerican others, hostile to the future of America are out to get America, and are responsible for the ills America suffers - now imagine that person in Nazi Germany- same feelings, but attached to a regime that was rotten underneath. However it took a long time for the rottenness to overcome the nationalistic fervor.
