CALGARY, Alberta, April 21 (Reuters) - Atco Ltd (ACOx.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) has won a contact to build a major work camp and permanent employee facility for Xstrata Plc's (XTA.L: Quote, Profile, Research) Koniambo nickel mine in New Caledonia, off Australia's east coast, the Canadian construction and energy conglomerate said on Monday.

Atco said its structures division will build a 600 person housing and core facility complex at the $3.8 billion mine.

It will eventually house 3,500 people, making it one of Atco Structures' largest such projects, division president Michael Shaw said.

Shaw declined to give the value of the contract, other than to say it is in the tens of millions of dollars and that ultimately it will get into the hundreds of millions.

It is the size of contract the company, controlled by Alberta's Southern family, is searching for around the world, he said.

"They cause other issues in terms of having factories booked out, but they also open up a lot of opportunities," he said.

The modular buildings of the 187,000 square foot (17,400 square metre) complex will be built in Brisbane, Australia, and shipped to the site by sea. They include kitchen, dining and recreational facilities, as well as a clinic and bakery.

Installation of utilities such as water and electrical is due to start next month.

Atco Structures is bidding on large projects in such other regions as South America and Canada and hopes to announce a few new awards this year, Shaw said.

"It's a very active market right now in these types of businesses," he said.

Shares in Atco, which is also known for its power generation and natural gas transportation businesses, rose 45 Canadian cents to C$48.55 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
