Um, M is MUMPS. In the language itself, keywords can be shortened to a single letter. So it is natural for a MUMPS programmer to shorten the language name in a similar manner.

When DHCP was originally written, MUMPS was a natural choice. It has many database functions built into the language. The only other practical choice at the time was Pick/BASIC. And that was platform specific.

But, if you don't like MUMPS, VistA has been translated into Java and is web based.

I don't know much about it.
