Food Rationing Confronts Breadbasket of the World
By JOSH GERSTEIN
Staff Reporter of the Sun
April 21, 2008

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing. Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.

At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.

"Where's the rice?" an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. "You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous."

The bustling store in the heart of Silicon Valley usually sells four or five varieties of rice to a clientele largely of Asian immigrants, but only about half a pallet of Indian-grown Basmati rice was left in stock. A 20-pound bag was selling for $15.99.

"You can't eat this every day. It's too heavy," a health care executive from Palo Alto, Sharad Patel, grumbled as his son loaded two sacks of the Basmati into a shopping cart. "We only need one bag but I'm getting two in case a neighbor or a friend needs it," the elder man said.

Another thing Tim,

I have been laying in due to the shitty dollar is a lot of hardware and building type items for not a helluva lot of this stuff is made here, if anything..(maybe LUMBER and cement)..

I KNOW this is NOT for most here as they live in a suburban environment but it's just a thought I want to express.

Also, it's ONLY for those that CAN REALLY DO something for themselves and their love ones without just BSing about it..

NOT those just those dreaming about being a rugged individualist..:(

,For example, LUMBER, ready mix cement, screws, nuts, BOLTS, hand tools, etc. that are cheap now..

I repeat I know, this is NOT for most here as they live in a suburban, sterile environment but still it's just a thought I want to express.

This besides the OATMEAL, RICE and BEANS that might be needed.. :)

So this afternoon, I went to Home Depot and bought a bunch of 2X4s, kiln dried, standard or better for 1.97.. Plus a bunch of screws, lags, washers etc..

All cheap NOW until the sh!t hits the fan..

We will see..

Disclaimer:

The above post is ONLY for THOSE that can do something for THEMSELVES..

So he other day, we were at Home Depot picking up some fencing stuff so I thought I would add some cheap, basic concrete, since we were there, although I had some already, and guess what?, there was ONLY about 10 bags left so I bought four more.. There was some more expensive, speciality stuff left though..

Transportation costs and scarcities are going to SLOW DOWN basic supplies and create spot shortages for US..

It is just the way it is going to be from now on out....

Take care and stock up when things are in "stock"...:)
