Why is that? It would seem that UW is just part of a suite designed to make us strong. I don't see justification for some kind of institutional discrimination there. I mean, the mission is clear, is it not?

After Nam the conventional US Army recognized they did not know how to prevail in these UW wars and made a unilateral decision to avoid all future counterinsurgencies.

Since they had determined to never fight like that again, they insisted army schools and training centers drop the subject.

The only outfit that kept it going was SF. Then SF ran into a huge hurdle in 1998 when USASOC attempted to delete Unconventional Warfare from the SF mission set.

One lonesome SF Colonel put his professional carreer on the line to object vociferously. SF retained the mission, the Colonel never again got promoted.

He is really a hero in this war. Without his intervention there would not have been any unit in our military trained in UW on 9/11.
