"And severely punished those who didn't follow said "guidelines.""

It was an authoritarian government.

"Never played it from the Russian perspective, though that sounds interesting."

The first mission, you, with your clip firmly in hand, have to get past a wall of MG42s. Basically you have to wait for the pause as your local gunner changes barrels and run to cover. At one point, you have to drop back a little to get to cover. A KGB officer needs to be shot to facilitate that maneuver, else he would use his trusty machine gun on you. The next few missions the only way to get a weapon is to pick one up. Towards the end, a lot of the missions involve being a sniper.

Someone did a lot of reading on the Soviets during WWII. Too bad they didn't do the siege of Petrograd. It would have been interesting to work cannibalism into the game. Wouldn't have done much for the continuity of the character, however...

"which is the first time I learned of the way resource-poor Russia had to wage war in WWII."

Never saw the movie. The Soviets did the most in damaging the Nazi war machine. The cost was tremendously high. Some battles killed more than 1 million people.
