Yeah he did. That isn't necessarily socialist.

Apples and pineapples, Tim. He talked about Christianity and God about as much as he did socialism. Brumar, Taro and Tenchu are taking the stance that because he talked about socialism in his speeches, that made him a socialist. Especially his early speeches, he also talked about God. He certainly thought he had a special destiny and that usually requires some sort of deity to bestow said destiny.
