Was there knowledge of some potential for violence about this cult that would have led to the all out use of force?

My recollection of Waco was that there was evidence of stockpiling of weapons, and Koresh had given a lot of reason for everyone to know he was nuts. Also child protective services had made visits and gathered some evidence of suspected abuse prior to the raid.

While you may be correct about the state, does that mean that we should ignore cults or communities that violate the laws? Is that the only other alternative?

If they had been in Utah, state involvement would have probably been unlikely.
