Anecdotal evidence, but a friend of mine works in a South Bay civil engineering firm which was primarily residential (they did work all over the Bay Area, and down to Monterey/Carmel) has seen their gross revenue collapse to 1/3 of what it was 2 years ago, and they are trying to survive this year on commercial, but see further contraction in 2008. Many employees have seen the axe.

I contrast that info with the many reports here on this board that the Bay Area is just fine.
