Trucks would burn more fuel because they're not running at design speeds ... lower or higher, wouldn't matter, fuel per unit of ore hauled would go up, engineering pretty tight on those things nowadays ... plus they'd be running more hours for the same ore, although to say that is the same thing [? - i think, not an engineer, beyond the bush variety] ... this wouldn't be so significant in the grand scheme of things really, just something i'm used to considering, it all comes down to cost per tonne per metre of travel

[edit] - also, it takes measurably more fuel to keep a bias tire rolling, compared to radial

They laughed at me when I said run the trucks on grapefruit juice and turn them off when going down the ramp. Let the trucks going down haul the trucks coming back up. What you do is load the down trucks with tailings for filling stopes and put them on a HT line where their braking puts electricity into a line which is tapped by the up trucks.

I am still working on the grapefruit juice motor. It should be out soon. It might help to make a hybrid grapefruit-diesel. One stroke it would be diesel and the next g-fruit. So far the experiments are showing the pink grapefruit is superior to yellow.

I think eventually all mines will move their mills underground at the bottom of the mine, so they don't have to haul ore. When they load ore into the mill it would be falling and the braking of that fall would create energy to run the mill. 500 tons moving 1500 feet (1500 feet per minute down) would provide 900 HP for one hour per day. You get the backfill from the surface and deliver it the same way and get one more hour of 900 HP. If you take 100 tons of sulfide and burn them over 24 hours that will generate 400 HP continuous and generate 125 tons of H2S04 which is worth 175 dollars per ton. One wind generator at the surface will create 2.1 megawatts continuous and one acre of solar panels at 48% efficiency will generate 2.8 MW for 8 hours. The duty cycle of this would be about 30% during the summer so we get about 846 KW for summer daylight periods.

No need to buy oil at all. Energy is essentially free once you put the infrastructure in. If the installation lasts 15 years, the energy will be free minus the maintenance within 4 to 5 years. Add in the grapefruit cycle diesel for flexibility and you are being paid to mine ore. The price you get for the metals is gravy.
