Those options are rarely open to someone in a truly authoritarian state. I understand. But "authoritarian" is more satisfying because it includes a bit of Hugh's "evil." Seriously, those political models, the ones with liberal/conservative, authoritarian/libertarian axes, use the term. I think it's a reasonable term to use with regard to such things as single-payer health care. It just isn't the same tier of terms as those Hugh was using, socialist, fascist, that started this discussion. I prefer "statist," personally.
