"Fallon announced unexpectedly last month that he was quitting after just about a year as commander of U.S. Central Command." I thought he was pretty new to the job. The guy he replaced was there longer, but apparently had similar ideas. Did he jump or was he pushed? "Now they have a much more compliant head of Centcom. And the message they sent is loud and clear." They made it perfectly clear from the beginning. Like with Smirk's "compassionate conservative" dance, what he really meant that he was conserving his compassion, he is playing the same sort of word games when he talks about listening to his commanders. Like with everyone else, he only listens when they say what he wants to hear.
