I think you are right.

He can hammer McCain from here to next Christmas about the Iraq war, which is about as popular as a turd in a punch bowl. I think once Obama starts hammering on the issues the American people care about. McCain doesn't stand a chance- unless Iraq turns in to a peaceful paradise. I wouldn't want to bet on that happening.

Good point. Another reason Mccain-Obama contest will have to stick to the issues is because McCain can't afford to go negative if he's courting the moderates and independents - and he won't get half the latitude that Hillary got.

a campaign on the issues would be refreshing

I think that's a good point and could work.

But the attacks will come from 527s, not McCain. Obama will have to answer.

Allen,

I agree with what you say here.

I also think that emotions are running high right now because things are getting heated and down to the wire. I think many who say they won't vote for someone right now might feel a bit differently when faced with the decision of who to vote for in November.

There will be only 1 candidate that is against the war around in November. There will be only 1 candidate that will appoint someone that will bring some balance back to the Supreme Court. I think that means that no matter how bad things get in the primaries, once the nominee is picked there will be a boost in their polling numbers and things will calm down.

As I have said before and have heard others here say it as well. I think McCain's main chance to get elected is things in Iraq get real quiet through November. Otherwise, he will be on the wrong side of this important issue and whoever the Dem nominee is, they will be able to pound away at this.
