>>I've been on SI since 1995, and as far as I know the only person who has actually changed his or her mind on the basis of these discussions is . . .<<

Well, then you missed it when that happened on this very thread earlier today.

I've done it myself, on occasion, as well.

Your learned disregard of open mindedness is, I think, wrong. I certainly can't see how being able to change your mind means that you don't care about what has happened and will happen to you. I think there's a great value in being able to see when one is wrong. And nobody is always right.

Here's an opportunity for you to admit you're wrong about that. ;-)

That's way too depressing to read so early in the morning. When we quit reevaluating our stances, lose our curiosity, eschew learning, we ossify. Dead man walking. I find that sad, at best.

<<<I learned that if you don't stand up for your views nobody is going to do it for you. If you argue both sides, people don't trust you. I also learned that being open-minded is over-rated. It means that you don't care much about anything that has ever happened to you or will happen to you.>>>

Life could be very difficult if you do not have core beliefs. It is like not having foundations and you can't get good footing to stand on anything.

However, it is possible that you are not standing on firm ground. In that case, you shouldn't be stubborn, or dogmatic about it, you better move and try to get firmer ground to stand on.

Life is not static. People who survive are those that are nimble. A person may not be so lucky as to be born near firm ground. They have to keep moving.

And, of course, there are all those situations that are not compatible with where you are standing and where you have to find common ground.

Life is not that simple that you can just stand there come hell or high water.
