It means the losing side plays dirtier just to make failure more likely. It's a reinforcing cycle. The losers set out to prove their toughness by being obstructive, the winning party decides to steamroll them where they can, the losers lash back more, etc. That has been the pattern of our politics for many years. I'll take a look at anything and anyone with an interest in fundamentally changing it. Because each faction fighting a zero-sum battle for its particular agenda gets us nowhere as a country. But our primary campaigns quickly descend to that level of "labeling" and "defining" opponents, fancy words for smearing personalities. Once that is underway, all the other nasty crap just follows naturally.
