I believe ManyMoose would agree that looking at the other side of the argument, and being willing to rexamine your views in the light of new evidence or argument, is a good thing. I certainly believe that.

But having some inertia in this regard is also good. Firmly established principles should be resistant to change, and even opinions that aren't principles, shouldn't float around in the breeze, changing any time the wind shifts.<<

Interestingly, I had much the same thought after posting that. It occurred to me that MM and I were talking about different aspects of open mindedness.

The three of us agree, then, that being able to change our minds when new evidence of convincing arguments are presented is a good thing.

Of course having principles is important. I have some firmly held ones myself. I think it's also important to realize that sometimes what we think of as principles are actually just prejudices.
