The Bakken formation requires investment in new recovery technologies, including hozontal drilling, to realize its full capacity, which, as you say, is very significant. Using existing technology, the USGS estimates about 4 bbl, or about 1% of its potential volume. But still, add that to ANWR, FL and CA and it does serve to decrease our dependency on ME oil.

But in the end that doesn't solve the price problem, because oil is traded on the global market with China the new hog. So we need to do something else. We need to reinvent our nuclear industry to power more homes and businesses. And we need to invest in practical biofuel without adverse effects on primary markets. Wind and solar can also play minor roles.

I don't see pols seriously talking about any of this. They're too wrapped up in the Great Man-Made Global Warming Hoax, or in bashing the evil BUSH.
