"Most other government services are legal monopolies, so the incentive for them to deliver good results is a lot lower."

Not so! You can get retirement plans (SS) from MANY providers. Just as you can get medical services from MANY providers (Medicare, Medicaid). Which "legal monopolies" are you referring to?

USPS does a better job today than they did in the past -- I'll say that much. 15 years ago, they were an absolute train wreck.

They are hamstrung a bit by a legal require to deliver mail to locations where they could never do so profitably, so you have to give them that.

It may be a bit unfair to criticize them as the worst government has to offer -- they certainly perform better than Medicare or SSA or IRS.

But USPS is one quasi-government entity that OUGHT to be able to turn a profit. Still, one wonders why they cannot implement technology as their "competition" has. When I pay EXTRA for tracking with the USPS, there is no tracking. They don't know where the F a package is, if it got delivered or whatever.

>The point is that the USPS has adequate service in part because they face competition from FedEx and UPS.

They only face competition in a small part of their space -- they probably have no competition for about 90% of their business.
