My father fought in Guadalcanal. After that, and convalescence in Australia, he transfered to the Marine Air Corps- he never talked about what he did, except that he "bombed Japanese gardens". He was something of a hero in the Pacific, but I didn't find that out until after he died.

He talked a lot about Japan and the war- though academically, not personally. He used his GI Bill to get a degree in history from USC and a degree in library science from UCLA- or maybe it was the other way around.

I remember he was always glued to the set when USC and UCLA played each other.
