That's why he should have kept quiet about the NC ad. It did no good to publicly pit himself against the NC State party machine and lose, particularly over an ad that wasn't racist.

My personal belief is that people need to stand up for their First Amendment rights. It is nothing more than a tactic for the Obama forces to cry 'racism' any time legitimate criticism is aimed at their candidate.

McCain fell into that trap, did so in a public way, and made himself look both weak and rather silly, imo.

One needs to pick appropriate battles.

It's also a matter of knowing how to be the one to set the agenda, instead of getting sucked into an opponent's agenda.

The key word is "distance." McCain doesn't actually have any control over the ad choices of the North Carolina Republican Party, especially for its gubanotorial campagin. Nor can he control the 527s. The most he can do is have some influence over the national Republican Party.

Obviously both campaigns understand the limits of influence and control their respective candidates have and no doubt voters are less informed on these limitations. I just read mph's response to your question. Between using the silent approach or being a standup guy and letting your objections be heard, I'm not sure which was better in this situation. However, I do believe McCain will periodically remind people of the ethical standards he holds himself to and expects from his party. My own opinion is that it will probably reflect positively on McCain regarding the issue of character.
