I don't think the poor can possibly be better off with oil prices and food prices rising as they are. If we had kept the stasis in the ME, with Saddam in his corner, I doubt we would be seeing oil at these prices. Part of the dramatic rise in oil since the beginning of the Iraq war and our occupation is directly attributable to that- and for that we can blame the republicans, since it is their *fearless* leaders who dreamed this up.
