There were many intellectual arabs who saw a jewish state in the ME as a good thing. This is absolutely true. And how could one argue with it? Something under 5% of the Arabs who had been liberated from the Ottomans, BY the British, occupied what is now Israel. It was a totally reasonable price for these Arabs to have paid for their liberation; but then, they actually BENEFITED from it, when you look at the facts. Churchill, in the early 20s, pointed out that it was good not only for the Jews but for the Arabs who lived in Palestine -- as they would "share" in the benefits of Zionism. When Churchill was bashed in the House of Commons regarding Jewish hydroelectric projects, he said words to the effect of (paraphrasing): "the Arabs would never have done this for themselves, not in a 1000 years. They would have been happy to live on the wasted land allowing the water from the river to simply flow into the Dead Sea." Nobody who has even a vague knowledge of the history of this region would expect that the Palestinians would ever have undertaken to generate electricity and irrigate these regions. Churchill was exactly right.
