The nuclear industry remains a costly boondoggle which survives only with the assistance of various government subsidies.

Chevron's Board was aware of proposed nuclear systems which could theoretically lower the cost of nuclear waste, but until one of these designs become a commercial reality, if ever, the economics remain unchanged.

Sodium cooled reactors, while used since 1957 in a nuclear submarine, and have never met with commercial acceptance due to the inherent dangers involved.

Briquette-style nuclear fuel is another potential advance which makes the systems safer, but this does little to improve the economics.

An economic system would have to be a combination of low disposal costs combined with acceptable costs associated with accidents. In other words cost effective.
